Berkshire County residents who plan to travel over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend should begin their trip early, especially if they are planning to drive to their destination.

According to AAA, with gas prices low, and consumer confidence high, more than 54 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home this weekend, the most since 2005.

The vast majority, 48.5 million, will be taking to the roads, 5 percent more than last year. In Massachusetts, the total amount of travelers is expected to top 1.2 million, with more than a million traveling by motor vehicle. Both those numbers are also the largest in the state since 2005.

Here is a break down of how many people will be traveling overall on trains, planes & automobiles.

  • Automobiles: The vast majority of travelers 48.5 million will hit the road this Thanksgiving, nearly 5 percent more than last year.
  • Planes: The largest growth in holiday travel is by air, at 5.4 percent, with 4.27 million travelers.
  • Trains, Buses, and Cruise Ships: Travel across these sectors will increase by 1.4 percent, with a total of 1.48 million passengers.

I guess the best word to remember while traveling anywhere you are going this Thanksgiving is Patience.
