It's National Donut Day today, and if you play it right and don't mind driving around, you can eat about 12,000 calories in donuts without spending a dime.

Pretty much all of the smaller donut chains in the country are giving out free donuts, or at least discounts, today.

And these three MAJOR stores are also getting in on the action

1.  Krispy Kreme will give you a free donut for walking into their store, no purchase necessary.

2.  Dunkin' Donuts isn't being QUITE that generous . . . they'll give you a free donut when you buy a drink today.

3.  And Walmart is giving out free glazed donuts all day today.  They're planning to give away more than 1.2 million of 'em.

Even a burger place is getting in on the fun.

Burger King The fast-food chain is cutting a hole in its Whopper sandwich to create the “first flame-grilled donut” in Boston. The Whopper Donut only available Friday comes with a “free” mini slider, which is the donut hole of the burger.

1% of Americans either love or like donuts.  Only 1% hate them.

The 10 most popular flavors are Glazed, Boston cream, chocolate frosted, jelly, chocolate cake, maple, blueberry, bear claw, powdered sugar, and pink frosted.

And the most popular donut chains in the country are Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts which isn't surprising since they've got the most locations by FAR here in Mass.  They got 81% of the total vote.
