What are the Rules When Having a Backyard Campfire in Massachusetts?

It's been a decent summer in Massachusetts so far. Sure, we have had a few rainy days, especially here in Berkshire County, but nothing terrible, and the temperatures haven't been extremely hot, which always gets two thumbs up from me.

Having decent summer temperatures makes it easier and more enjoyable to take advantage of fun activities like hiking, biking, swimming, running, and walking. In addition, the current temperatures make it easier to get those backyard chores accomplished, including mowing, pruning, painting, raking, and other outdoor tasks on the endless honey-do list.

One summertime activity that many Massachusetts folks enjoy is sitting by a campfire. Whether it's chowing down on some s'mores or just taking in the beauty of the crackling flames, campfires are a big hit with Bay State folks.

If you want to have a little backyard campfire in Massachusetts, you can, but there are a few rules you need to keep in mind, per mass.gov. Those rules and reminders include the following:

• Keeping the fire to a reasonable size (some sources say a maximum 3 feet wide and 2 feet high)
• Located away from combustible materials (again, some sources say at least 25 feet away from materials like a fence, house, or deck)
• Contained in a non-flammable enclosure
• Tended by someone who is 18 years of age or older (the fire should be watched at all times by this person)
