The recent icy weather here in The Berkshires has got folks dealing with some problems in terms of ice on their sidewalk and/or driveways.

With the weather not looking to warm up back above the freezing mark until Thursday of this week, the City of Pittsfield wants to remind you that there is some complimentary sand and salt mix available for residents.

The Department of Public Services announces that sand piles have been placed at three locations around the city.

  • Barker Rd. Fire Station (ENGINE 1)
  • Peck's Rd. Fire Station (ENGINE 5)
  • 37 Elm St. (at the intersection of Deming and Elm)

Sand will be available for pickup by Pittsfield residents for their own personal use throughout the winter season. Residents are requested to limit their pickups to 50 pounds (one 5 gallon pail) per visit.

Users of these piles are requested to report suspected abuse (loading of pickup trucks, etc.) to the DPS Highway Division office (499 9314). -cityofpittsfield.org

Due to the recent icy weather, I did notice that the Peck's Rd. fire house was running low on sand already, just an FYI.

LOOK: Here are the 50 best beach towns in America

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.
