As we all know, the monthly downtown Pittsfield street festival known as Third Thursday was not held in 2020 thanks to the pandemic. But Third Thursday is returning this year and it begins this month!

According to a Press Release From the City of Pittsfield Office of Cultural Development, Third Thursday kicks off what would have been its fifteenth season on May 20 with a program of virtual STEM activities in partnership with General Dynamics Mission Systems.

A team of General Dynamics engineers developed a virtual platform to help introduce students of all ages to incredible STEM(Science Technology Engineering and Math) experiences from their own homes. The virtual platform is called Camp GD.

For the inaugural virtual event on May 20th, CAMP GD introduces the topic of buoyancy. Participants will receive various types of cookies included in the free kit. Have a glass of milk available to learn why certain cookies float while others sink.

The video link that will be made available on the 20th will provide all the instructions for the activity and kits with the needed materials for the interactive demos will be distributed on Saturday, May 15, at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts from 10 am-12 pm or by appointment. First come, first served.

CAMP GD will be releasing interactive STEM demonstrations virtually every month throughout the season with topics ranging from roasting s’mores with a solar oven to building balloon rockets.

And hopefully, this season's Third Thursdays will become more than virtual. Jen Glockner, Pittsfield’s Director of Cultural Development, says her office will be reassessing plans as the season progresses based on state, city, and CDC recommendations.
