First responders quickly made there way to a fire at a multifamily home at 476 Fenn Street just before 3 pm on Tuesday. The Berkshire Eagle reports that 17-year-old Jaidyn Strack smelled something burning in her older brother’s room and called police. The teenager was able to escaped the fire that tore through her family’s Fenn Street apartment, but her 11-month-old black Lab, Monty, was killed in the fire.

All other occupants, including several children, made it out of the building safely. Pittsfield Fire Chief Thomas Sammons said that firefighters rescued a few dogs and various other animals from other units in the building. The cause of the fire was under investigation with help from the Office of the State Fire Marshall.

Three families were displaced as a result of the blaze. One of the units was completely destroyed, and another was damaged by smoke and water. According to Deputy Fire Chief Ronald Clement, two of the units will be habitable.

The American Red Cross was on the scene and assisted one of the displaced families with finding shelter for the night.
