It is now spring and your kids have probably really wanting to get out of the house and have some fun fishing and it's free! The first fishing derby for kids 14 and under will be held at Wild Acres Park. The City of Pittsfield Conservation Commission, in conjunction with Lyon Aviation, will sponsor a free fishing derby for youth 14 and under Saturday, May 8 at the Wild Acres Conservation Area (rain or shine).

Wild Acres Park is a 1.2 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Pittsfield, Massachusetts that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for walking, running, and nature trips

The derby will be held 8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The accessible trail down to the pond is now open. As there will be limited capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions, pre-registration is required and will end on Thursday, May 6. Participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

Just so you know, only one parent per child will be allowed. Pre-register by emailing wildacresderby@cityofpittsfield.org; be sure to include the child’s name and age as well as the accompanying adult’s name and contact information.

Masks are required for all attendees. Volunteer support will be provided by the Onota Fishing Club to assist with dressing fish, providing fishing tips and techniques, baiting, and more. Trophies will be awarded to those who catch the largest fish (length and weight); trophies will be awarded at noon.

Bait will be provided. Wild Acres Conservation Area is located off of South Mountain Road in Pittsfield. For more information, contact Becky Manship, at 499-9371.
