The Highland Restaurant In Pittsfield Is Closing After Nine Decades
On Sunday, I was scrolling through social media and reading posts about The Highland possibly closing in Pittsfield. At first, I thought it was just a rumor and that it wasn't true. But sure enough, it turned out to be true when the restaurant made an official post on its Facebook page.
Growing up in Berkshire County, I can't tell you how many times I've dined at The Highland Restaurant. I'd be out and about with my parents, and if we were in the Pittsfield area, my mother always picked The Highland. It was also our go-to spot almost every New Year's Eve, as long as the holiday didn't fall on a Monday or Tuesday, when they were closed.
Either way, The Highland will always hold a special place in my heart. To me, it's more than just a restaurant; it's a place where memories were made. Let's dive into some of the eatery's history.
Restaurant History
The Berkshire Eagle reports that The Highland is one of Pittsfield's oldest continuously operating restaurants, having opened in 1936 and been run by members of the Arace family since 1969. Before it was The Highland, it was called Marty's Luncheonette, where the restaurant's occupancy began in 1926.
No closing date has been confirmed, and it remains unclear what the future holds for the Fenn Street location. The eatery thanked its employees and customers for their decades of "loyalty, dedication, and friendship."
