Recalls Have Been Coming Fast & Furious For Pets, Here Is The Latest
Seems like every time we turn around we are hearing about another recall for our pets. If you have a cat or cats, here’s what you need to know.
The recall of certain packages of Smalls Human-Grade Fresh (Chicken and Turkey recipes) was issued because of a refrigeration problem — which the company says was compounded by the fact that Smalls doesn't use preservatives.
The food is all natural and gets shipped to customers frozen.
Apparent refrigeration issues led to a voluntary recall of certain packages of Smalls cat food earlier this year. It was the first recall in the company’s history.
In an announcement on the Smalls website dated June 2021 but which went unpublicized for nearly 3 months.
Smalls co-founder Matt Michaelson explained that the recall was initiated after a few customers complained that the products
“looked spoiled and had an unusual color.”
The following recipes and lot numbers of Smalls cat food:
Smalls Human-Grade Fresh Ground Bird Chicken Recipe Cat Food, 11.5 oz., lot numbers 21109 through 21136
Smalls Human-Grade Fresh Smooth Bird Chicken Recipe Cat Food, 11.5 oz., lot numbers 21109 through 21136
Smalls Human-Grade Fresh Ground Other Bird Turkey Recipe Cat Food, 11.5 oz., lot numbers 21109 through 21136
Smalls Human-Grade Fresh Smooth Other Bird Turkey Recipe Cat Food, 11.5 oz., lot numbers 21109 through 21136
Even though Smalls sells 2 main types of cat food human-Grade Fresh and Freeze-Dried Raw, only the Human-Grade Fresh was part of the recall, and only the Chicken and Turkey recipes (not the Beef).
No cat illnesses were reported in connection with the recall, which the company says was carried out in consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
