Correct pronunciation is important! No one ever wants to mispronounce anything, ever. It can totally bring a conversation to a halt. Typically, before you even attempt to pronounce something that you're not exactly sure about, the best thing to do is ask someone else. Or maybe just Google it, duh! It just so happens that Massachusetts has more than a few cities and towns that are mispronounced quite often.
A list of the most mispronounced cities in the U.S. has been released, and Massachusetts had one of the most commonly mispronounced cities on the list. In fact, it's the very top one on our list that you will see below. Surprisingly, none of these others made that particular list, but are definitely just as much a problem for many to pronounce correctly.
When you mispronounce something, not only does it accentuate someone's personal lack of knowledge of whatever it is that they might be talking about, but it also doesn't say much about what your knowledge is overall. Before I moved here, I admit, I didn't know how to pronounce 'Berkshires'. The first time I said, it was like, "Burk-shy-urs". Obviously, that's wrong and I sounded like an idiot. Instant facepalm!
