If you live in Pittsfield or Dalton and you’ve been hanging on to your old electronics, appliances or other items that you can’t put in the regular trash, then this is the day for which you have been waiting. Some of us, without naming names (me), have two old televisions, three old computer monitors, three desktop computers, seven printers, and a ridiculous pile of keyboards, mice and various other peripherals that needs to go away. If you’re like me, you will be interested in the Recycling Rally and Sustainability Fair that is being held at Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield on August 3rd.

This is a great opportunity to dispose of all your bulky waste, within limits, but you do have to register in advance for the event. Below is the complete press release from the City of Pittsfield regarding this event. See you there!

Greening with Guardian

Recycling Rally and Sustainability Fair – Aug. 3

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Back by popular demand, the Greening with Guardian: Recycling Rally and Sustainability Fair will return this summer with a host of expanded offerings and exciting attractions on Saturday, Aug. 3, at Berkshire Community College (BCC).

The event, sponsored by the Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, in partnership with the City of Pittsfield and the Town of Dalton, now provides both Pittsfield and Dalton residents a venue to dispose of old electronic items, appliances, bicycles, even paper shredding and much more. In addition to increased recycling opportunities the event will also feature an educational fair within BCC’s Patterson Field House that will have nonprofit organizations dedicated to local environmental causes, a food truck, face painting, music, and even a photo booth. Both events are being expanded by the help of like-minded community partners.

City of Pittsfield residents must register online here: https://www.cityofpittsfield.org/electronics_recycling___sustainability_fair/electronics_recycling___sustainability_fair.php  or in person at the Department of Public Utilities Office, 10 Fenn St. on July 26. The office is also accessible by an entrance at 100 North St. Please note City Hall offices close at 4 p.m.

While the event is free, there is a $15 advance fee (per item) for cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions and monitors. Those seeking to dispose of CRT television screens and computer monitors should register directly at the DPU office. Payment can be made via check only and addressed to the collection vendor, EPC, Inc. Payment must be made prior to the event.

Dalton residents can call the Board of Health and register by phone, 684-6111, ext. 20.

Third Thursday Festival July 18

Additionally, Guardian will have information at its table at the Third Thursday festival on July 18 on all the acceptable items and will be available to answer questions. Participants are encouraged to complete their registration by July 26.

Mayor Linda Tyer said this event helps community members to be good environmental stewards.

“I am truly excited about this year’s event and the many opportunities it will provide residents to do their part to preserve our environment. Together, all of our efforts help to create a better Pittsfield for those of us here today and for future generations.”

Larry Hazzard, Vice President, Head of Disability Income Product, Underwriting and Claims division for Guardian, noted the company’s ongoing commitment to this project.

“Our focus on environmental sustainability represents both a business priority and an employee passion,” said Hazzard. “Our Pittsfield Green Team’s mission is to help improve our community by educating on – and encouraging participation in – sustainable actions and environmentally friendly behaviors.”
