Adams Help Wanted – Adams Police Chief
Adams has officially posted for the position of Police Chief to lead the town’s police department. Currently interim Police Chief Troy Bacon was named interim Chief in June following the retirement of Chief Richard Tarsa.
Chief Troy arrived in Adams in June from Frankfort Indiana and was chosen by town officials from a field of five who interviewed for the interim position. The temporary Chief’s position is for a term of 6 months. Chief Troy is speculated to be the front-runner for the permanent position just posted by the Town of Adams. The Town of Adams, Massachusetts is seeking an experienced, energetic and dynamic law enforcement professional to manage its Police Department ($1.8 million budget) and provide leadership for its 16 full-time officers. Adams is a picturesque valley town of approximately 8,500 residents in beautiful northern Berkshire County at the base of Mount Greylock, the Commonwealth’s highest peak, with easy access to the region’s wealth of outdoor recreational opportunities. With both urban and rural characteristics, it is the third largest municipality in the Berkshires featuring an attractive and compact town center with surrounding residential neighborhoods. Adams is a close-knit community that enjoys a high level of service, citizen engagement and respect for its proud history. The Town is positioned to take advantage of its strategic location between the population centers of Pittsfield and North Adams with a variety of housing, small business, light industry and recreational opportunities to live, work and play.
Applicants must possess significant management experience, skills, training and progressive law enforcement experience. Successful candidates will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills; experience leading, hiring and recruiting a millennial workforce; a strong commitment to community engagement; ability to collaborate with stakeholders, minority groups and other agencies; understanding of collective bargaining agreements and experience managing a unionized workforce and a thorough understanding of 21st century policing best practices and implementation. Requirements include a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or a related discipline, 10 years of law enforcement experience, 5 years supervisory experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to candidates with previous administrative experience and advanced education. Salary range is commensurate upon qualifications and experience.
